Chebaa's Water Mills Museum

Chebaa, Hasbaya district

In the valley of Nahr el-Moghara, which flows at the foot of the village of Chebaa, seven water mills over 500 years old are nestled. The mill of Moudaba Abou Hawili is the only one that continued to grind grains until 1994. The other six mills had stopped turning since 1978, following a flood that caused great damage.

For a long time, the Chebaa mills were neglected. The cut-stone walls collapsed. However, with funding from USAID, Mercicorps has restored two mills. One of them has been transformed into a museum. The other is still functioning. To do so, they had to rehabilitate the basin that holds the water from the spring, whose flow does not allow the mill to operate continuously. Once enough water has accumulated, the gates are opened. The water is then channeled to the mill.
