Al Muallaq Mosque

This mosque is a mid 16th century Ottoman structure in Tripoli, the second largest city north of Beirut. It is situated near the south end of the city’s main street of the souks. Built by the Emir Mahmoud Lutfi El-Za’im on top of a passageway, it was named Al Muallaq (The Hanging). Visitors can access this hanging mosque by climbing a flight of stairs to the second floor entrance. True to its Ottoman design, the minaret is octagonal and adjoined by a small dome above the door. On the eastern side of the mosque is a garden containing the tomb of the Emir and his deserted castle.
